WebPress bed. The press bed is the easiest piece to make. Take two pieces of 3-inch channel iron, each 24 inches long. Set them back to back, as shown in the sketch, with about 3-1/4 inches between them. (The exact distance apart should be slightly greater than the width of your upright material, which in my case was 3 inches.) WebStep 6: Insulate your forge. Use a 50/50 combination of Plaster of Paris and sand to insulate the base of your tray with a refractory coating. Mix the two ingredients together dry and add a small amount of water until it is a clay-like consistency. You are aiming for a 1cm coating all around the inside of the tray.
